What is Oral Sedation?

Also known as conscious sedation, this is a pill you take either the night before your dental procedure or an hour before. It helps calm your nerves and gives you comfort during treatment. You will be in a sleep-like state, but still cognitive enough to answer any questions or listen to dental instructions if need be. The strength of the pill is determined based on your situation. It is a non-invasive type of sedation that is often chosen for oral surgeries like wisdom teeth extraction.

When Might You Need Oral Sedation?

Oral sedation is good if you are afraid of needles, have dental anxiety that stops you from getting treatment, have a strong gag reflex, or may respond badly to a local anesthetic. For treatment to go smoothly with little to no possibility of movement and accidental bumping of a dental tool against your skin, this is an ideal choice. There are, of course, instances where oral sedation is not recommended, but your dentist in NE Calgary will speak with you about this beforehand. Prior to administering any medication, your dentist will review your complete medical history.

How Is Oral Sedation Administered?

When taking oral sedation, you must prepare to have someone you know and trust to get you to and from the appointment. The pill will then be provided to you by your dentist in NE Calgary who will give you instructions on when to take it.  The person caring for you will need to stay with you for some time after returning home to make sure you are cognitive enough to be on your own limiting the risk of injury. It is important to follow dental post-procedure instructions to steer clear of risks such as dry socket which can be extremely painful and require emergency dental. Some of these instructions may include avoiding drinking alcohol, not drinking through a straw, and avoiding strenuous activity for at least 48 hours.
