What is Teeth Whitening?
Teeth whitening is the process of restoring your teeth to a lighter, more natural shade after they have become stained. Extrinsic stains are often treated with professional teeth whitening at your NE Calgary dentist. This procedure typically uses a hydrogen peroxide gel to bleach the enamel and help make your teeth white safely and effectively. The results? A smile you can’t wait to show off. A healthy-looking smile can boost your confidence, helping you feel great while your teeth look amazing.
Professional teeth whitening is quicker, longer lasting, and uses controlled safe whitening agents compared to over-the-counter products. The process takes less than one hour, and you can be confident in the results.
7 Reasons Why You Should Consider Getting Your Teeth Whitened?
- Diet – Perhaps you eat a lot of highly-pigmented food and drink leaving you with stains on your teeth. Professional whitening can give you a more aesthetically pleasing smile in as little as one appointment.
- Poor Dental Hygiene – Ignoring a good routine of brushing and flossing can wreak havoc on your teeth. This can lead to dental issues including stains on your enamel.
- Smoker – If you are a smoker there is a higher chance of developing yellow spots on your teeth.
- Age – As you age, it is normal for your teeth to become yellowed, but a professional whitening can help minimize this occurrence.
- Genetics – The thickness of your enamel can influence its appearance. Redheads, for instance, tend to have thinner enamel which means they are more likely to experience stained teeth.
- Trauma – Falling and injuring your teeth can cause them to discolour.
- Illnesses and Medications – Often going hand in hand, these two things sometimes cause discoloured teeth.
Not to worry since we, at Savanna Market Dental, are here to treat your stained teeth regardless of the reason.
What is The Process of Teeth Whitening at Your Calgary NE Dentist?
A highly concentrated and controlled portion of active bleaching gel is used to remove extrinsic teeth stains at the dentist.
- Step 1: Your condition is evaluated with questions about what may have caused the staining of your teeth. X-rays may be suggested to identify internal issues.
- Step 2: A cleaning will be performed to get rid of any bacteria, food particles, and other substances on or in your teeth.
- Step 3: You will get one of two types of teeth whitening:
- Vital Whitening: This is the most common type of whitening where the area around your teeth and gums is protected with a dental shield. The whitening gel is applied to your teeth and a specialized light is used to stimulate the gel. When complete, the gel is removed and your teeth, gums, and tongue are wiped clean.
- Non-Vital Whitening: If you had a root canal then this is the procedure used. The whitening gel is used inside the tooth since stains come from the inside. A dental drill makes a small hole for the whitening agent to be placed inside. You will be given a temporary filling until the right shade takes effect which is usually a few days. Once this time has passed, the dentist will remove the gel and put a permanent filling in your tooth.
If you have veneers or porcelain crowns, then another form of treatment will be suggested. Regular whitening will not work on these cosmetic additions. To keep your smile looking bright, teeth whitening is recommended about once every year.
