What Are Braces?

Braces are an orthodontic appliance that is used to straighten your teeth. They help everything from underbite, overbite, and crossbite to crooked and impacted teeth. At Savanna Market Dental, we want you to have a smile you look forward to showing off and our orthodontic services can help you do just that. Be comfortable chewing without issues and speaking clearly without your misaligned teeth getting in the way of these everyday functions.

Why Might You Need Braces?

Braces are a huge help when it comes to oral health. Misaligned teeth can easily harbour bacteria which leads to infection and decay. This is because it is easier for negative particles to hide out in spots that are difficult to brush clean. Avoid the bad breath and other dental issues that come with crooked teeth by getting your teeth into the positions they belong in. Properly aligned teeth and jaw help keep your mouth comfortable.

Signs and Symptoms You Need Braces

Frequent Tongue Biting – Do you accidentally bite down on your tongue often? This could mean you have a misaligned smile and need orthodontic treatment to correct the problem.

Jaw Clicking – Is your jaw making a clicking sound when you chew? This may be due to a rubbing together of your jawbones from misaligned teeth. Braces can correct this issue.

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ) – If you experience headaches or jaw pain often you may have TMJ. This can be caused by your teeth improperly fitting together.

Be on the watch for these signals and visit us at Savanna Market Dental for a solution to your dental issue.

What Types of Braces Are There?

When you want to get your teeth aligned your dentist will present you with an array of choices depending on your situation.

  1. Traditional Braces – These braces are made of metal brackets and wires which are adhered to your teeth. They also have elastic bands that help with specific alignment problems. A series of adjustments during the treatment period help to fix all types of dental problems.
  1. Self-ligating Braces – Similar to traditional braces, this style of oral appliance has clips that hold the wires in position. You may get metal, ceramic, or clear brackets for these. An array of dental issues can be corrected with these, but you will need a different option if you have severe jaw problems.
  1. Ceramic Braces – These kinds of braces are a little more aesthetically pleasing and comfortable than traditional braces. You can choose from all sorts of colourful options with ceramic braces. They are typically used for less severe alignment issues.
  1. Lingual Braces – Fitted to the inside of your teeth, these braces are usually used for minor dental complications. They are great in that they are less visible to the naked eye.
  1. Invisible Braces – Also known as clear aligners, these are barely visible, if visible at all. This is a good option for correcting your small dental concerns. These are clear trays worn for two weeks until you are fit for another set on a gradual basis of the shifting of your teeth. They are only considered for minor straightening problems.

At Savanna Market Dental, we provide the clarity you need to decide on any of the orthodontic work that needs to be done.

What Are the Steps Taken When Getting Braces?

  • Step 1 – Consultation: There will be a consultation with your dentist to provide you with all the information you need about the specific type of recommended braces.
  • Step 2 – Plan: Everybody is different so a treatment plan will be put into place based on your situation.
  • Step 3 – Application: Each tooth will be cleaned in preparation for your new braces. You will either have brackets cemented to your teeth or clear trays fitted to them. This depends on the type of braces you are getting.
  • Step 4 – Discussion: Your dentist will provide you with instructions on how to care for your teeth with braces and the orthodontic appliance itself.
  • Step 5 – Depending on the kind of braces you get, you will go in for an adjustment or new set of aligners at various intervals. Adjustments usually happen within eight to ten weeks and new aligners are fit to your teeth in about every two weeks. Each set of braces will require a different amount of time until the final results are seen. This can be anywhere between 12 to 18 months or 12 to 24 months.

Feel the difference properly aligned teeth provide. At Savanna Market Dental, we make sure you are healthy and happy every step of the way.
