What is Intravenous Sedation?

Intravenous sedation (IV sedation) is a drug administered through a tiny needle inserted into your vein to help give you a calming effect and provide a comfortable feeling. The drug enters your bloodstream and takes effect quickly, leaving you in a semi-conscious state. This is the strongest of sedation methods at your Calgary NE dentist commonly used for complex treatments. It is also a good choice if you have extreme dental anxiety so your treatment can be done without hindrance. Dosage can be adjusted anytime during treatment and the medication may also be reversed if required.

Why Might You Need IV Sedation?

When you can barely stand the idea of your dental treatment but need work done then IV sedation can be of much help. It will give you the feeling of being deeply relaxed. This may be a recommendation if you have extreme sensitivity, special needs, or claustrophobia in the dentist’s chair.

What Happens During IV Sedation?

Your dentist has special training to administer this kind of sedation, or it will be given by an anesthesiologist who is specifically trained in IV sedation. You will be continuously monitored for the utmost safety.

  • Step 1: A tiny needle is inserted into the appropriate vein in your arm where the drug transfers through the needle into your bloodstream. You may be given a different, additional needle which numbs the area about to be inserted.
  • Step 2: Your pulse and blood pressure are monitored to ensure you are getting enough oxygen into your bloodstream. The treatment is performed.
  • Step 3: Though the sedation may wear off within an hour after treatment, it is still important to have someone drop you off and pick you up, then stay with you until you are good to be on your own. You will need to take the rest of the day off and rest.

There will be a list of post-procedure instructions provided to you by your dentist in NE Calgary. This is to help make sure you have the knowledge necessary to safely care for yourself.  Depending on the treatment you were given, the post-procedure instructions will vary. This may include things like staying hydrated and avoiding drinking through a straw to prevent dry socket. This issue will require an emergency dental booking.
