What Are Sealants?
Do you want a way to lessen the chance of getting cavities? Dental sealants are the answer! These are thin, plastic coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of your teeth, usually on the back molars as this is where most cavities occur. They help to smooth out the surface of your teeth to prevent food particles from sticking in the grooves of your enamel.
Sealants are only viable for non-filled teeth. For this reason, they are not as common for adult teeth. This option is ideal for children because they have more difficulty getting the surface of their molars clean than an adult. Cavity-causing bacteria begin to form when food particles are not completely removed from your teeth.
Though sealants eventually deteriorate over time, they can offer protection of your teeth for up to ten years and they can be replaced. Save yourself costly dental visits by protecting your teeth with an easy treatment from your dentist in NE Calgary.
When Are Dental Sealants Needed?
It is a good idea to get dental sealants as soon as molars start coming through the gums. For children, this is usually between the ages of 6-14. For adults, anytime you want a little extra protection is a good time for this treatment.
What is the Dental Sealant Procedure?
Glass ionomer or composite resin sealants only take minutes to apply.
- Step 1: Your tooth is cleaned and dried before an acid gel is applied to it.
- Step 2: The surface of the tooth becomes rough, allowing the sealant to form on the tooth.
- Step 3: The gel is left on for a few seconds and then rinsed off. The tooth is dried and ready for the sealant to be applied to the grooves of your tooth.
- Step 4: A special blue light hardens the sealant, giving your tooth a strong, protective barrier.
