What Are Porcelain Crowns?

Crowns are also known as caps and provide you with an array of options. They are dental coverings that protect your teeth from further damage or decay.  Crowns are used to:

  • Cover a damaged tooth or a tooth in need of a large filling. The hollow artificial cap is used when there is not enough natural tooth left.
  • Protect weak teeth from fracturing
  • Work with dental implants to fill a space
  • Attach to a bridge
  • Add natural colour to discoloured teeth
  • Restore the natural shape of your teeth

Crowns provide a natural appearance so no one will know that you have capped teeth. The latest techniques are used to bring your mouth back to functionality and health.

Why Might You Need a Porcelain Crown?

It might be time to get a dental crown at your Calgary NE dentist if you:

  • Have a weak tooth in danger of breaking
  • Need restoration to a tooth that is extremely worn down or broken
  • Need to cover a dental implant
  • Desire a more aesthetically appealing look
  • Protect a tooth at high risk for tooth decay

Porcelain is used to create dental crowns due to its durability and natural appearance. It can be formed to mimic the shape, texture, and colour of your natural tooth.

What are the Steps When Getting a Porcelain Dental Crown?

A porcelain crown can boost your confidence and offer a discrete cosmetic solution to damaged teeth.

  • Step 1: The tooth and surrounding tissue are numbed.
  • Step 2: The gums are separated from the tooth with retraction chords to prevent damage to the gums while the tooth is trimmed. This is to ensure the proper fitting of the crown. If you have severe decay, filling material may be used to build up the tooth.
  • Step 3: An impression is taken of your teeth so a 3D dental crown can be made.
  • Step 4: A temporary crown is placed on top of the tooth to protect it while the permanent crown is being created.
  • Step 5: The temporary crown is removed and the newly made crown is placed over your tooth and then checked for the proper fit.
  • Step 6: Adjustments may be made until the crown is perfectly formed to your tooth and cemented into place.

There may be slight discomfort after this procedure, but this will go away in a few days. If you experience discomfort for longer, then call us at Savanna Market Dental right away and we will take care of you.
