What is a Composite Filling?

Do you have a chipped or broken tooth? A composite filling is a special dental material used to fill your tooth, restoring it to its natural look and function. These fillings are created to mimic the colour of your tooth so no one will know the difference. A filling preserves the strength of your tooth offering long-lasting protection from further damage. Composite fillings bond well to the existing enamel, allowing more of your natural tooth’s structure to stay put. At Savanna Market Dental, we help fill your smile so you have the confidence you need in daily life.

Why is a Composite Filling Needed?

Along with fixing your tooth and avoiding deeper cavities, composite fillings at your Calgary NE dentist can help disguise discolouration. A composite filling can bring back a natural-looking colour to your stained teeth. Extrinsic stains occur due to consumption of highly pigmented food and drink, smoking, or aging.

What Happens During a Composite Filling?

Your Calgary NE dentist will let you know if this is the right type of filling for you then proceed with additional steps.

  • Step 1: Your dentist looks at your teeth and matches the shade of the filling to your tooth’s natural colour.
  • Step 2: The area and surrounding zone will be numbed so the treatment is comfortable for you.
  • Step 3: A dental drill is aimed at the decayed area and used to remove the bad bacterium.
  • Step 4: The tooth is cleaned and then dried, and some enamel may be shaved off.
  • Step 5: Etching and bonding are completed to prepare the tooth.
  • Step 6: The composite material is placed in your tooth in layers and a specialized light is used to cure it. Each layer is cured one at a time.
  • Step 7: Your tooth is shaped and polished.
  • Step 8: The dentist will check your bite and make minor adjustments so you can move your mouth normally.

You may experience sensitivity to hot and cold items after this treatment, but this should go away in a few days. If it continues, contact us at Savanna Market Dental so we can rectify any issues.
