What is Silver Diamine Fluoride?

An FDA-approved antibiotic liquid, known as silver diamine fluoride (SDF), can stop decay from continuing, especially in children’s mouths. It is used until a baby tooth comes out or your child can get a more permanent solution such as a filling. Of course, it is only used on those who do not have sensitivity to silver and is never used on already painful cavities.

Why You Might Consider SDF Treatment at Your Child’s Dentist in NE Calgary

Our team at Savanna Market Dental will discuss all possibilities with you, and let you know if SDF is right for your child. Here are some instances where this kind of procedure may be right:

  • Have a Child with Tooth Decay – Children tend to squirm around a bit in the dentist’s chair, but there is less chance of this when there are no drills and injections required. SDF is a non-invasive procedure providing treatment without drilling or injections.
  • Exposed Dentin – There is more chance of sensitive teeth when your child has exposed dentin. SDF guards their teeth from sensitivity by sealing the dentinal tubules.
  • High Risk – Is your little one at risk of getting tooth decay? SDF is a preventative step to avoid the progression of early-stage tooth decay for the time being.
  • Save Money – Do you need a little extra cash before a filling can be completed? Silver diamine fluoride treatments can save a tooth while you save up for this type of dental procedure.

What is the Process for Silver Diamine Fluoride?

Step 1: Cleaning, Drying, and Isolation – The affected tooth is fully cleaned, dried, and isolated.

Step 2: Application – A small brush or applicator of another kind is used to put the SDF on the tooth.

Step 3: A fluoride-infused sealer is placed on top of the SDF so it can inhibit the growth of cavity-causing bacteria, hardening the tooth.

Step 4: Follow Up – About a week later, you will return to your child’s dentist in NE Calgary so they can assess their situation and apply another round of SDF if needed.

Your dentist will recommend using a fluoride rinse once a day at home on top of regular brushing and flossing. This further helps the SDF do its job.

There may be discolouration where the SDF touched, but this is a completely normal side effect and an indicator that it is doing what it should to protect your child’s enamel.
